Overview
Liver surgery removes a diseased part of the liver while preserving enough healthy liver to keep working. The liver can regenerate, which is why carefully planned resection is possible even for sizeable tumors. Every plan starts with imaging, liver-function tests and an honest discussion of the benefit, the risk and the alternatives.
Dr. Mostafa Mamoon Warid performs hepatic resection, liver cyst surgery and operations for intrahepatic stones as part of his hepatobiliary practice, and coordinates with gastroenterology and oncology colleagues when combined treatment is needed.

01
Surgical indication / কখন সার্জারি প্রয়োজন
- Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) in a liver with adequate reserve
- Selected secondary (metastatic) tumors, for example from colorectal cancer
- Large or symptomatic haemangioma, simple or hydatid cysts
- Stones inside the liver ducts (hepatolithiasis) with recurrent infection
- Liver abscess that does not settle with drainage and medicine
02
The procedure / অপারেশন পদ্ধতি
Depending on the disease, surgery may be a segmental or anatomical resection, cyst excision or de-roofing, or removal of stones with duct clearance. Before surgery the team reviews CT/MRI, liver-function tests and, where relevant, tumor markers to estimate the size of the remaining liver. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, open or laparoscopic as suited to the lesion.
03
After surgery / অপারেশন পরবর্তী যত্ন
- Hospital stay usually ranges from a few days to about a week, depending on the extent of resection
- Early walking, breathing exercises and gradual return to a normal diet
- Blood tests to monitor liver function in the first days
- Follow-up imaging and, for cancer, a surveillance plan agreed with you
Questions about Liver Surgery & Resection (Cirrhosis, Tumor & Cysts)
Q. Can a person live normally after part of the liver is removed?
Yes, in most cases. A healthy liver regenerates within weeks, which is why surgery is planned so that enough healthy liver remains. Your liver function and scans are checked before surgery to make sure it is safe.
Q. Is every liver cyst an indication for surgery?
No. Small simple cysts without symptoms usually need only observation. Surgery is considered for large or painful cysts, hydatid cysts, or cysts that look suspicious on imaging.
